  Finding affordable health care can be challenging.  However, there are some good local resources.  Listed below find some affordable general health care resources; please call LINC/2-1-1 for more specialized health care needs.

    Provides faith-based primary health care in five locations on sliding fee scale.  Services include primary care for adults and children,  obstetrics and gynecology, dental care, mental health care and some medications.

  • Church Health Center - Primary Care Clinic and Walk-In Clinic
    Provides faith-based primary medical care (including exams, x-rays and laboratory tests) on an appointment basis for people who are employed or self-employed but uninsured; cost is sliding scale.  Available services include dental care, vision care, mental health counseling, physical therapy and some medication, but not obstetrics or family planning.  Also provides walk-in clinic for people who are uninsured and need immediate care.

  • Memphis Health Center
    Provides adult and pediatric primary medical care, dentistry and vision care, OB/GYN, family planning and prenatal care, laboratory tests, x-rays, podiatry and breast and cervical cancer screening on sliding fee scale at two Shelby County locations.

  • Memphis/Shelby County Health Dept
    Provides wide range of primary and preventive health care services on sliding fee basis for adults and children at public health department clinics located throughout Memphis and Shelby County.

  • Walgreens - Take Care Clinics
    Provides free basic, primary health care at Walgreen's Take Care walk-in clinics through December 31, 2009 to current and future Take Care clinic patients and their families who suffered job loss after March 31, 2009 and have no health insurance.

    Services include treatment of respiratory illness such as colds, bronchitis and sinus infections, common conditions such as allergies and urinary tract infections, and common skin conditions such as poison ivy and minor burns.  Laboratory services necessary to diagnose these common conditions are also included in the free service.  Health evaluations, vaccinations, physicals and injections are not included in the free service.

  • Church Health Center - MEMPHIS Plan
    Provides health care for those who are employed at least 20 hours a week in low-wage jobs in small companies or are self-employed and without health insurance.  Services include primary and specialty care, hospitalization and emergency room costs, some diagnostic and laboratory tests and x-rays, dental and optometry services, mental health counseling and prescription discount card.  Cost: Monthly premiums for covered employees and their dependents plus some very limited service fees.

  • Cover Tennessee (Cover TN)
    Provides five programs:
    1) Access TN - provides health insurance for adults in TN who are "uninsurable" due to specific medical conditions
    2) Cover Kids - provides comprehensive health insurance for children in TN who are uninsured, and to low-income pregnant women for maternity and prenatal services.  Costs include low co-pays on services; very low income families may qualify for waiver of monthly premiums.
    3) Cover Rx - Provides prescription drug discount card to low-income TN residents without prescription drug coverage.  Co-pays on prescriptions are sliding scale based on income.  (See below).
    4) Cover TN -  Provides basic health insurance for working people in TN who work for small businesses or are self-employed.  Costs include monthly premiums and co-pays, no deductibles.
    5) Cover TN - Tennesseans Between Jobs - Provides health insurance to eligible Tennesseans laid off from work, have lost job due to plant closing, or have had hours reduced to less than 20 hours a week within the past six months.  Must be able to pay monthly premiums.

  • TennCare
    As Tennessee's Medicaid waiver program, provides health care coverage for many low-income individuals and families.  Eligibility criteria are quite specific and not all health care providers accept TennCare.

Prescription Drug Assistance

There are some local and national organizations which provide limited one-time financial assistance for prescription drug medication, but funding is often limited or unavailable and the eligibility criteria may be quite specialized. 

  Please call 2-1-1 for availability of one-time direct financial assistance for prescription medication.  Here are some possible resources for more on-going prescription drug assistance: 

  • City of Memphis Free Prescription Discount Card
    Provides free prescription discount card provided by City of Memphis government in collaboration with National League of Cities.  Card provides discount on many prescription drugs if prescription is not covered by insurance.  Card is accepted at many area pharmacies.  There are no age or income requirements and no limits to the number of times the prescription discount card may be used.   Pet medications which are also prescribed for human use may also be covered.

  • Cover Tennessee - Cover Rx
    Provides prescription discount card for Tennessee residents without prescription drug coverage through another insurance plan.  There are sliding-scale co-pays based on income, but no monthly premiums.

  • Family Wize Prescription drug discount card
    Provides free prescription drug discount card -- supported by United Way of America.
  • Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPARx) - Patient Assistance Programs
    Provides information about all the drug manufacturers' Patient Assistance Programs for several months supply of free or discounted prescription drugs.  Not all drugs are covered.   Patient and health care provider must provide required paperwork to each manufacturer's program.

Specialty Care

  • Southern College of Optometry - Eye Clinic and Low Vision Clinic
    Provides eye care for people with  Medicare, Tenncare or self-pay.  Also provides discounted low-vision care to people on limited income with extremely limited vision, and discounted eyeglasses to schoolchildren whose families qualify.

  • UT College of Dentistry - Dental Clinic
    Dental school students provide dental care (including periodontics, dental surgery, prosthodontics and some emergency dental care) for adults and children at fees lower than private practice rates.  Dental clinic accepts some TennCare plans and private pay.
