Subscribing to Search Results

Want to keep up with the latest from your favorite author, or know when the library gets a new title about your favorite topic? You can subscribe to a search and have updates sent regularly to your computer.

First, do a search; then, on your search results page, look for the orange XML button towards the top-right of your results. This indicates that you can subscribe to the search through  RSS .

Without getting into a lot of technical detail, RSS ("Really Simple Syndication," or "Rich Site Summary") is an application based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) that is used to distribute and share web content via a  feed aggregator , or  news reader . Many of the most popular aggregators or readers are free. Some of them (such as  Bloglines  and  My Yahoo ) are web-based, while others (such as AmphetaDesk  ) have to be downloaded to your computer. Another service,  FeedBlitz , allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds through your regular e-mail account. (See the  RSS Compendium  for an extensive list of readers and aggregators.)

To add the RSS feed for a specific search, click on the orange XML button on your search results page. Copy the URL for the new web page that opens at that link; then follow the instructions for your particular feed reader to add the URL to your subscriptions.
