Limiting by Library, Item Type, etc.

When using an Advanced Search, you can limit your search in a number of ways by using the drop-down menus that appear at the bottom of the search boxes.

  • Library - Limit your search to a specific library or region.
  • Language - Limit your search to items in a specific language.
  • Item Type - All items in the catalog are given an item type.  You may find this useful if you want to limit your search to a DVD or a VHS.  You may find that it is too specific.
  • Format - This also allows you to limit to a certain type of material but is not as specific as Item Type.  For example, to limit your search to books on tape or cd, choose "spoken sound recording".
  • Item Group - Yet another way to limit by type of material.  However, whereas item type can be too specific and format can be a bit broad, "item groups" are customized groupings of item types that can be created upon request.
  • Location - This lists all of the shelving locations throughout the system and is useful for locating an item, but is not very useful when searching.
  • Item Category 1 - This is a decent way of limiting your search to a specific genre or to non-fiction or fiction.
  • Item Category 2 - Use this to limit your search to either Adult, Children's, or Young Adult material.
  • Pub Year - Enter a publication year to limit your search to a specific year of publication.  You can use greater than ">" or less than "<" symbols.
  • Sort Results By - The default sort is by "Reverse Pub Year" which lists newer results first.  You can sort by author, title, or subject as well.  (NOTE: If your search retrieves more than 400 results, they will not be sorted in any discernable fashion.  System resources require us to set this limit).
