Specified Entries

Every catalog record has a particular format consisting of standard entry tags. The most common format is the MARC format with MARC entry tags. The search can be limited to certain fields and entries within a record. When searching by words or phrase or when searching by everything, type your search expression followed by the entry tag(s) enclosed in braces in the appropriate text field. For example, if you enter CHOPIN {100} items written by Chopin are located.

Only the specified entries/fields in the records for your search term are located.

Other formats may use different entry tags and fields appropriate to the database you are searching.

Keyword Index Synonyms

Similar to searching by specifying entry tags, the library allows one or more of these entry tags to be represented with a keyword index synonym name. The search can be limited to certain fields and entries within a bibliographic record without typing several entry tags. When searching by words or phrase type the search term followed by the Keyword Index policy name. Only the specified entries/fields represented by this abbreviated name are searched.

Other formats use different entry tags and fields appropriate to the database you are searching. Refer to the following table for a list of the equivalent search fields for keyword indexes.

Search Field Internal Synonyms Keyword Indexes Searched
author AU 100, 110, 111, 700, 710, 711, 720
title TI 130, 245, 440, 730, 740
subject SU 600, 610, 611, 630, 650, 651, 655, 690, 691
series SER 400, 410, 411, 440, 490, 800, 810, 811, 830, 840

For example, to find any materials with the author Charles Dickens, type Dickens {AU} in the General Keyword field. Items are located by searching all of the MARC entry fields represented by the keyword index synonym, AU; in this example the e-library will search the 100, 110, 111, 700, 710, 711, 720 entry tags.

Or... you could just use the Advanced Search page which allows you to search multiple indexes.
