2008 JobLINC Job Fair a Success
Autozone booth welcomes attendee. Click for larger picture.
The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library is known for its vast collection of books and available computers. These knowledge
resources allow customers to get information for educational and/or recreational pursuits. Recently, however, the Library offered
a non-traditional service at the JobLINC Job Fair. On Tuesday, July 15, over 40 companies were on-hand to interview and recruit
the 900 job seekers who showed up at the Central Library. Sponsored by SunTrust, the Job Fair was organized by JobLINC, the
Memphis Public Library & Information Center’s mobile job and career center that offers assistance to those looking for employment.
JobLINC lists available jobs and locates training opportunities for those who are interested. Companies like Auto Zone, Regions
Bank, the Memphis Police Department, and the City of Memphis talked with Job Fair attendees.
Robyn Stone, the Memphis Public Library & Information Center employee who organized this year’s Job Fair, was more than satisfied
with the turnout. “The companies were diverse and excited to be here,” she said, “and the reactions from job seekers were very
favorable. All over the Library, people were filling out applications for employment. It was an exciting day.” Another Memphis
Public Library & Information Center employee, Wymon Brown, was also very pleased with the Job Fair turnout. Brown led a workshop
at the Fair entitled “Getting Started in an Apprenticeship.” “I led participants to doleta.gov, a government website that gives
information on job training, job placement, and information on apprenticeships for plumbers and electricians,” said Brown.
Attendence was high throughout the day. Click for larger picture.
The companies in attendance found individuals of various experience levels and backgrounds. At the Auto Zone booth, a young
man spoke of his prior management skills, while at the Aging Commission of the Mid-South booth, an older gentleman discussed
opportunities for volunteering. A group of ladies at the Regions Bank booth signed up for interview times, and the officers
at the Memphis Police Department booth spoke to a group of young men.
The crowd at the Job Fair never thinned as applicants filed into the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library all day. Some were
simply visiting the Library and discovered the Fair was going on, while others came dressed in business suits ready to speak
with potential employers. “This is one of the best Job Fairs I have been to,” said Thomas Crisp, a young Memphian who has been
looking for work and found out about the Library’s Job Fair through a friend. Crisp talked to several vendors who were all interested
in his past work experiences. In fact, vendors were so impressed that some job seekers were hired on-the-spot.
Officer Madelyn Kaleta of the Memphis Police Department found that many attendees were very interested in protecting the
city. “Fifty-two applications were given out—49 for potential police officers and 3 for potential police service technicians.
We even ran out of applications and went out to the car to get the rest and ran out again!” said Officer Kaleta.
The JobLINC bus will be visiting several branches of the Memphis Public Library & Information Center and also places like
the Department of Human Services (DHS) on Jackson and the Kroger on Lamar next month. For a complete list of
JobLINC’s July
schedule, visit the Library’s website at www.memphislibrary.org, click on the “Community Information and Referral” link and
