Cordova Branch Library Hosts Chess Tournament

The Memphis Chess Club invites teens 12 – 17 years old to the Cordova Branch Library, 8457 Trinity Road, on Saturday, July 17, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. for a chess tournament. Beginner through intermediate players can enter.

Tony Maneclang, United States Chess Club Federation Tournament Director and Memphis Chess Club Secretary, touts exposing the benefits of chess to a wider audience as a precipitator for holding the event at the Library. “Chess players compare multiple moves. So, kids develop their analytical skills playing the game.” Maneclang adds that improved problem-solving skills are another byproduct of play. “Finding solutions under time-pressure makes players focus.”

Unlike other competitive sports, there’s no height, size, or physical advantage. ”It’s all mental,” asserts Maneclang.

There’s no cost to participate in the non-rated tournament. For more information about the event, call 754-8443. To learn more about the Memphis Chess Club, visit memphischess.com.
