Position Title: Assistant Master, Tender (MVO/FLO)
Series/Grade: XH-5784-07
Full Performance Level: XH-07
Duty Location: Official Duty Station is the Ensley Engineer Yard
Hourly Salary Range: $28.81 to $33.62 per hour
Work Schedule: Full-Time
Appointment Type: Permanent
Travel Requirement: Temporary Duty Travel is 25% or more

Responsibilities/Duties: Serves as assistant operator of a diesel tender assigned to Yards & Docks unit and operates the
vessel in the absence of the Master, Tender.
Performs preventive maintenance during standby periods. Performs daily maintenance checks
and makes routine operating repairs and assists in making overhauls of major components.
Performs general housekeeping duties on the tender. Performs small boat
repairs. May be assigned to operate an alternate boat performing hydrographic surveys at various
locations along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Operates at all angles to river currents
of various velocities and through changing currents and eddies.
Operates motor vehicles and boats to transport personnel, materials, and supplies to and from
job sites. Utilizes and maintains lifesaving and safety equipment. Responsible for maintaining
tenders/boats and/or trailers and towing vehicles. Maintains a log of daily operations indicating
data such as hours of operation, approximate miles traveled, and supplies utilized.
Works as a member of the Fleet work crew. Assignments will be received from the Leaderman
and/or the unit Supervisor. Work duties include but not limited to assist with the transfer of
fuel from tanks and barges, dry-dock work group assignments, fleet crane work assignments,
yardwork, string-out maintenance and general housekeeping, and hazardous and industrial
waste collection and storage. Assists other Yards and Docks crews on an as-needed basis in
general work assignments.
Schedule: During Daylight Savings Months, typically March through October, this position
works four 10-hour days each week beginning on Mondays. During the rest of the year, the
work week consists of five 8-hour days beginning on Mondays.
Physical Effort: Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. Regularly lifts to 50
pounds. Continuous standing, walking, and stooping are required.
Working Conditions: Works around moving machinery and floating plant. There is danger of injury because of
snapping cables and lines moving heavy equipment and lifting heavy anchors. There is exposure
to traffic hazards, especially at night. Since work is over water, there is danger of drowning,
although workers are required to wear Kapok vests.
Conditions of Employment & Notes: This position requires a USCG License.
Must possess at a minimum, a Master of Towing Vessels upon Western Rivers and a valid radar
endorsement. In the absence of the Master this position qualifies at the dual-rate at the XH-09.
Must obtain and maintain a Tankerman PIC – Dangerous Liquids within 24 months of
employment.
This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening, and random testing
thereafter.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examination to
ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the
position.
Employee may be required to serve up to 3 to 4 months continuous deployments per season.
This could entail working away from home, on the river or other places for 3 to 4 months
straight year after year.
Must obtain and/or maintain forklift operator’s license within 12 months of employment.
