Memphis Then and Now: Downtown Other
North Main Station
Shortly after the Civil War, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad established a depot near the intersection of Main & Auction Street (now known as A.W. Willis Ave). Today the location is still a transportation center, home to the North End Terminal of the MATA Trolley’s Main Street line.

Standing at the intersection of North Main Street and Saffarans Avenue, one can see the evolution of the downtown skyline. The Sterick Building and the Lincoln American Tower are visible in both images, highlighting the degree of growth over time.
We’ll be adding more Memphis Then and Now photographs as the bicentennial year progresses. Check back here for the latest images or follow DIG MEMPHIS on Instagram to learn when new photos are added to the site!
