About Project READY

For the last five years, Mustard Seed, Inc. has offered the R.E.A.D.Y. (Reinvigorating and Empowering Disadvantaged Youth) enrichment program for youth grades 9-12 who live in the 38126 and 38106 zip codes. Due to the pandemic, the program is offered by Zoom and begins on November 6, 2021.

This program will meet every other week on Saturdays only for twelve sessions.

READY is a holistic job readiness training. It consists of soft-skills job training that are not taught in school (e.g., professionalism, communication, teamwork), but can make the difference between keeping a job or not, and maybe getting that promotion. ACT skills, financial resource management, and African American history are studied. A virtual cooking and nutrition class helps students to learn to prepare healthy meals and learn that a healthy body is central to being a productive worker. Virtual college visits and role model presentations help students to visualize possibilities for their future.  Students completing the program receive a $150 stipendCooking supplies and a bag of groceries are made available, and delivered to the homes of students in some cases, so that students can prepare the meals taught in the cooking class. All students receive ACT flash cards to have a home-based resource to continue their ACT test preparation. And the best benefit of all is that students have fun learning and being empowered. Hear from one of our students.

“Mustard Seed Inc. is a wonderful program that encourages students, grades 9th-12th, to prepare for college. One thing I love about this program is that I can learn so much about science, math, reading, and work occupations for free. Mustard Seed Inc helps so many students understand daily life, and making the right choices.” — Caitlyn Chaney, READY Student 2019-2020
