
Memphis Public Libraries is seeking an experienced, visionary Library Director to lead our system into its next chapter of service, growth, and community impact.

About the Role
The Library Director works under the general administrative direction of the Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer and serves as the chief executive leader of Library Services. This position provides strategic direction for library programs, operations, staff development, and long-term planning.
The Director serves as a key liaison between library staff, City leadership, and community partners, ensuring that the mission of Memphis Public Libraries remains strong, visible, and responsive to the people we serve.
What This Role Leads

Setting the vision and strategic direction for the library system

Supporting and empowering library staff through strong leadership, structure, and professional development

Overseeing library operations, budgets, contracts, and grants

Representing Memphis Public Libraries to City leadership and local, state, and federal partners

Evaluating and strengthening library programs and services

Leading long-range planning, including capital improvements and renovations for library facilities

Staying attuned to changes in technology, public service, and community needs to guide future growth
Position Details

Salary: $145,000.18

Schedule: Full-time; some evening and weekend work required

Work Environment: Office-based with travel to library locations and meetings throughout the city
Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution

At least ten (10) years of experience in a public library setting
-
Five (5) or more years of significant management experience

Experience working across branch and main library systems preferred

Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
-
Valid driver’s license required
Residency Requirement
In accordance with the City Charter, employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months of hire.
