Shelby County Board of Commissioners Announces the 2025 County Commissioner’s Summer Youth Program


The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is proud to announce the launch of the 2025 County Commissioner’s Summer Youth Program, an initiative designed to provide young individuals in Shelby County with meaningful work experience, valuable job skills, and real-world career insight.

This program, sponsored by Shelby County Chairman Michael Whaley, aims to help youth develop strong work habits and receive on-the-job training while earning a competitive wage.

📅 Application Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2025, at 4:30 PM

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:
✔️ Reside in Shelby County, Tennessee
✔️ Be currently enrolled in school (includes public/private high school, home school, trade school, or college)

Compensation & Placement

💰 Ages 14-15: $10.00 per hour
💰 Ages 16 and up: $15.00 per hour

Interns will be placed in various Shelby County Government departments, corporate sponsor organizations, and non-profits based on availability. Work hours may vary depending on placement.

📩 Appointment Letters Sent: April 14, 2025
📢 Orientation Sessions:
🔹 1st Orientation – May 3, 2025
🔹 2nd Orientation – May 10, 2025
🏢 Internship Start Dates: June 2, 2025, and/or June 9, 2025
🏁 Program End Date: July 25, 2025

Required Documents & Federal Employment Compliance

Under federal law, all new employees must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility. Upon being hired, participants must present one of the following:

  • A U.S. Passport
  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization
  • An unexpired foreign passport with employment authorization
  • An Alien Registration Card (with a photograph)

If none of the above are available, the following documents will be required:

  • Valid Driver’s License or State-Issued Photo ID
  • U.S. Military Card
  • Original Social Security Card (NO EXCEPTIONS)
  • Unexpired INS employment authorization
  • A voided check or deposit slip (for direct deposit setup)

Both the application and background check form must be submitted to complete the application process.
