Position title: Student Trainee (Engineering and Architecture)
Grade: GS-03, GS-04
Hourly Pay Range: $15.61 to $20.11 / hour
Geographic Location: Memphis TN, Operations Division, Physical Support Branch, Plant Section
Travel Requirement: Temporary Duty Travel is about 10% of the time

Work Schedule: Full-time when not attending classes (i.e., summers and/or co-op semesters).
You may work full-time or part-time as school schedule allows. Work hours are flexible and will
typically be Monday through Friday.
Eligibility/Type of degree we’re seeking: Students seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees
in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Environmental, etc), Architecture or Scientific
areas (Biology, Geology, Environmental, etc)
Typical duties of student position: Performs technical and technical aid-type tasks in support of
various functions within the assigned District. Performs a variety of tasks involving
mathematics, science, and engineering. These tasks may include, but are not limited to:
research and data gathering in support of routine agency procedures or reviews; recording and
compiling information from field, technical documents, design reports, plans, specifications,
publications, and other engineering design documents; extracting and utilizing information
from publications and guidance to support group tasks, such as analysis and design; reviewing
gathered data or research for accuracy, adequacy, and possible correcting. Prepare or revised
CADD drawings of engineering design representations, e.g., plans, elevations, sections and
details. Will use engineering scales and can change scales of drawings on CADD work.
Competencies needed for student positions: Knowledge of engineering techniques and methods
to extract data and measurements from prescribed sources; recognize errors from limited
knowledge of subject matter; prepare information in tabular and graphic form; and assist
engineers and technician with specific assignments. Work under general supervision and receive
detailed instructions on scope, methods, and expected results. Understanding of related
processes and engineering methods. Assignments will involve engineering tasks related to
developing, executing and improving production processes. Ability to proofread reports and
specifications to ensure accuracy of text and formats. Capable of using computers to input
data, run programs and verify printouts to assess accuracy. Skills to compile data and
information used in the preparation of reports and memorandums.
Student trainees qualify as described below.
GS-03 Completion of one academic year of post-high school study (30 credit hour minimum)
GS-04 Completion of two academic years of post-high school study (60 credit hour minimum)
