Responsibilities/Duties: Serves as a 3rd/2nd Mate on a Class I self-propelled dustpan pipeline
dredge engaged in channel maintenance in the inland waters of the U.S. Stands a shift watch
and supervises the work of a crew of 2-12 subordinates employed in any combination of
occupations including tender operator, deck equipment operator, pipelineman, deckhand,
welders, etc. Exercises responsibility for the continued operation, maintenance, and safety of
the dredge and attendant plant during the shift. Work activities directed during the assigned
shift watch include any of the following: making and breaking up of tows for dredging moves,
placement and movement of dredging anchors; lengthening, shortening and movement of the
pipeline; operation of pipeline baffle plate; operation of winch and hoisting engines; transfer of
and placement of pipeline from barge to bank and movement of such pipeline during or upon
completion of work; maintaining and repairing pipeline and deck equipment, replacing cables,
lines, sheaves, dustpan, rubber sleeves, etc.; general maintenance including cleaning, chipping
surfaces, painting, minor woodwork, and metal repairs; cleaning suction or cutterheads; placing
lights and targets; placing dredging targets; taking and maintaining records of soundings;
servicing deck equipment; loading, unloading, and movement of materials, equipment and
supplies; etc. Incumbent may be considered for noncompetitive promotion to the XH-09 Level
(2nd Mate) upon receiving U.S. Coast Guard 1600 ton Mate License and satisfactorily
demonstrating performance of duties.

Qualifications Requirements: Selectee(s) must have a valid USCG license.
3rd Mate – Master of Towing Vessels, Western River.
2nd Mate – Master of Towing Vessels Western River and 1600 Gross Ton Master
Must pass physical exam and drug screening test if selected for position.
Failure to progress f rom the XH-08 level to the XH-09 level within 24 months will be
grounds for removal.

H.P. propulsion, 1500 H.P. main pump, 450 H.P. jet pump D.C. motors, air compressors, air
conditioning systems, water making plants, sewage systems, fuel oil systems, electrical systems,
light plants, winches, and hydraulic cranes. Makes periodic inspections by visual and auditory
means of all machinery to determine the operating condition and the need for maintenance
and repairs and makes adjustments to eliminate major breakdown of equipment. Checks and
controls the quantity of fuel, oil, water, etc. to determine the proper functioning of dredge
machinery. Accomplishes repairs, such as replacing bearings, repairing fuel lines, grinding
valves, replacing cylinders, pistons and shears in auxiliary pumps and machinery, removing and
replacing complete assemblies. Assists in making major repairs and overhauls during layup.
Assists in painting and other housekeeping duties in engine room.

Responsibilities/Duties: Incumbent serves as a Deckhand on the Dredge Hurley and performs a
variety of work involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the deck and general
housekeeping functions on dredges, towboats, barges, or other floating plant vessels. Official
Duty Station is the Dredge Hurley, position requires (non-TDY) travel with the Hurley, shift
work, and mandatory overtime.
Schedule: During the dredging season, typically May through November, all Hurley crew
members, including this position, work a 15 days on/6 days off schedule, with the work period
beginning and ending on Wednesdays. On the 15 work days, employees remain on the Dredge
Hurley and are provided meals and lodging. This position works a 12 hour shift, and may rotate
between day and night shifts. During the non-dredging season, the crew works day shift only,
with the vessel based at Ensley Engineer Yard, Memphis, TN, on either a 5-day/8-hour or 4-
day/10-hr schedule. During the dredging season, the Dredge Hurley will work in widespread
locations in the Mississippi River, including up to 120 days in the vicinity of Baton Rouge, LA.
This is a permanent seasonal position, seasonal workers are normally placed in non-pay status
(laid off) for part of the non-dredging season.

Qualifications Requirements: For all qualified employees currently within the Memphis
District, must possess/obtain current TWIC. Must pass physical exam and drug screening test if
selected for position.

Responsibilities/Duties: Hooks and unhooks lifting frame from concrete mattress sections in
congested areas in the close proximity to cranes or derrick boats transferring loads from barges
to mattress fabricating plant or loading to trucks from casting field and loading from trucks to
barges. Guides pickup frame to loads and guides load into place when being lowered by crane.
Fastens or unfastens slings, rigging, etc., for loads in movement by crane or derrick boat in
connection with revetment construction operations.
Schedule: During the Revetment season, typically June through December, all Revetment
employees, including this position, travel in various locations along the Mississippi River. The
employees work 12 work days on & have 2 days off. Employees will be on TDY & will lodge in
hotels within the vicinity of the work area. During the work season this position works typically
a 10 hour shift. During the non-Revetment season, the crew works at Ensley Engineer Yard,
Memphis, TN, on either a 5-day/8-hour or 4-day/10-hr. Can be assigned to work on Hired Labor
