The legacy of the Memphis Orff program in the Memphis City Schools is exemplified through the All-City Concerts that began in 1972. The music created and performed for these concerts reflects the consistent and enduring music education training based on the principles of the Orff-Schulwerk approach that has impacted elementary music teachers, student participants, the local community, and has mirrored the city’s evolving cultural heritage. Historical methodology as well as musicological analysis and ethnographic approaches were applied to the archived musical scores. It is hoped that the performance practices as well as the orchestrated musical scores will be utilized by a wider audience because of this research.
The collection materials, both physical and digitized items, are still being processed in the Memphis & Shelby County Room and will include photographs, programs, musical scores, and teaching notes. Updates will be posted as the project continues.
