Teen Zine Workshop Camp Application

Channel your creativity in writing and art in this week-long summer camp. Discover the ins and outs of zines and create your own about a topic you’re passionate about. This workshop will provide participants with: 

  • One-on-one mentorship with local expert 
  • Group brainstorming and critique 
  • A guaranteed spot at Memphis Zine Fest in September 
  • SNACKS! 

This summer camp is led by the curator of Memphis Zine Fest, Erica Qualy, and is intended for teens ages 13-17. It will take place at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Cloud 901, from July 17 to July 21, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on each day. Apply today and take the first step to making your mark on the zine world!

This is a week-long workshop series and your attendance to each session is expected. Can you commit 2 hours daily from 4-6pm during July 17-21?
MPL staff and the participants in this workshop series will attend the Memphis Zine Fest at Crosstown Concourse on Sunday, September 3. The teens involved will have the ability to share/sell their zines at the event. Your parent or guardian will need to bring you to this location on the day of. Can you attend this event?

By selecting “yes” you agree that the participant of the camp can be filmed and photographed for grant compliance, and you give the Memphis Public Library & Information Center permission and rights to use the camp participant’s image(s) and / or voice(s) for broadcast on WYPL–TV 18 and WYPL Radio, photographic image, or written submissions in Memphis Public Library’s publications, social media, and displays. This release is made without charge to the Memphis Public Library & Information Center now or in the future, and it entails no obligations, legal or otherwise, on the part of Memphis Public Libraries or its broadcast services.

Camp Guidelines

Guidelines Include:

  1. Students must be signed-in each day that they attend camp.
  2. Students must dress in closed toe shoes and clothes that may get stained or messy
  3. Students will be under the supervision of artists and program coordinators. They will be allowed to leave once an approved parent/guardian has picked them up.
  4. Students will be asked to follow directions, and be courteous and respectful to teachers, assistants and fellow campers.
  5. Students should always get the teacher’s permission before using supplies and equipment.
  6. Students should always pick up after themselves and put away supplies and equipment when they are done with them.
  7. Never touch another camper’s artwork without his or her permission.
  8. Students should always wait their turn when using supplies and equipment or taking part in activities.
  9. Students should always do their best.
